He pursues her with a passion despite Maric’s continuous expression of disinterest and rejection.Įventually, they end up together. It is during her time at university that Maric first meets Einstein – the perpetually disheveled genius who is intrigued by Maric’s intellect and aloofness. Maric is driven, passionate about her chosen path, and an intellectually gifted woman despite her classmates and professor looking down on her for being a woman, she strives to get a degree. Although fictional, Benedict’s work closely resembles the life of Maric as we’ve come to know it today. The book is told from Maric’s point of view, highlighting her struggles as one of the few women of her time to be given the opportunity to study physics at an elite school, up until the demise of her marriage with Albert. Marie Benedict first entertained the idea after researching her child’s project about the life of Maric. The Other Einstein follows the life of Mileva Maric, wife of the infamous Albert Einstein. Reading it felt like watching your house burn down – you know it’s not going to end well but you can’t look away. To say that the book The Other Einstein is heartbreaking would be an understatement. This framing technique is more than just a useful device for decoding gender and genre it''s also quite fun. Attebery uses cultural theory to play the kind of "what if" game so near and dear to the collective heart of the SF community. Highly recommended."Lisa Yaszek, Extrapolation "Decoding Gender''sgreatest strength is its methodology. The concluding chapters convincingly demonstrate why these multiple histories matter.he has given us a way to see them more clearly. Attebery''s wide-ranging but judicious use of feminist theory balances especially nicely with his detailed analyses of individual SF texts both, in turn, provide fresh perspectives on SF history-or, more accurately, on SF''s multiple histories. Le Guin "Decoding Genderaddresses issues in powerful ways through its nuanced exploration of both masculine and feminine SF writing traditions. Fair-minded and vastly tolerant, knowledgeable in every field of science fiction and fantasy, writing with vitality, clarity, and humor-he has given us a work that will engage and reward both the scholar and the interested lay reader."Ursula K. "Brian Attebery is wonderfully fitted by nature, training, and experience to take on the complex subject of this book. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Inheritance by katharine mcgeeIt didn't matter to me that so much of the events of this book were things that readers already knew happened, I think that getting to see them play out was still a good time so it works for fans already and it really sets the tone for people who want to get into the series and hit the ground running with American Royals. Katharine McGee just knows how to write this series in such a way that I eat up every single installment. I'm too excited to read book three to wait but am going to have to reread it through her narration as soon as it becomes available. She is so great at handling the multiple POV's of Beatrice, Sam, Nina, and Daphne. (Is that vague enough?) I still love him and can only hope he returns in some fashion for the next book.Īny time I hear Brittany Pressley's voice, I immediately think of this series. It made me have a little bit of a boo-boo lip reminding me once again I picked the wrong love interest in a certain love triangle. She explores in more detail the driving factors behind each girl's personality and what sets up her American Royals world. Katharine rewinds the story to the night everything seems to shake up for her cast of characters. Dipping my toes into this world again through this novella was the delightful listen I had to have to get back into the swing of things. Book two was so good but that ending made me want to strangle a certain character we all love to hate. I know I'm not the only one who about lost my mind when the third book for American Royals was announced. |
